“Bionic Colon”

My wife was talking with her friend a while back about me having another kidney stone (hopefully just a hold over from the Prednisone) and he said something that I just found to be hilarious. He asked her something like “isn’t he like bionic elimination man?” I thought that was great. I’ve humorously used “prosthetic colon” before about my ostomy bag, but I think I might switch to having a “bionic colon”. It probably doesn’t fit as precisely with the dictionary definitions, but it just sounds cool!

Hi. I am 28 and had a total colectomy 3 years ago. I have been looking for blogs or other groups of people who have had similar experiences because as you know, post-op, there are some issues that tend to pop up. I just found your blog and was especially interested in the kidney stones. Since my operation, I have been diagnosed with kidney stone disease, which I was told can be caused by constant dehydration post colectomy. I look forward to reading more about your experiences- it makes me feel slightly less strange :) Wishing you the best!

Hi Meredith. You’re definitely not alone, but I don’t know if being similar to me makes you less strange :)

As to the kidney stones, I haven’t had any problems since getting those last ones out of there. I think my problem was with the Prednisone. Kidney stones is one of the possible side effects of taking that.

I can see how dehydration would cause them. I’m actually way more “hydrated” since the surgery since I’m not having the terrible diarrhea, but in the warmer months, I definitely have to drink plenty and take potassium tablets to keep my electrolytes in balance.

If the kidney stones are huge, there are a lot of good herbs out there to help break them up and dissolve them out. My godfather had them bad for a while and used catalpa beans (as a tea) to handle them. And there’s chanca piedra which I used for a while.

Most of mine passed on their own, just hurt like &*^%& while they did. I only had one that I had to actually have taken out since it got stuck.

Hello everyone, I’ve just found out that I need to have a colectomy and would like to hear about other people’s post-op experiences. Looking forward to hearing from some of you.
